The winter meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club "was hold on' Saturday in fine but windy weather. The course was in good order. There ivus a large, attendance, and tho totalisator turnover amounted to £15,920, compared with £15,233 and £17,048 10s last year, when tho meeting extended over two days. The chief attraction of the day, the Sapling Stakes, produced the greatest contest since the inception of the race. Four of the seven starters were bunched at the top of the straight, and a fine finish resulted in Rich Ore defeating Haydoek by a neck, with Acre a Read away third, and Rey Logan close up. Rich Ore, who was making his first appearance in a race, is by Rey do Oro, who also sired Haydoek and Rey Logan. Haydoek, who had been off the training track for some time after the Ashburton. Racing Club’s meeting, registered an excellent performance in the circumstances, and the Author Dillon youngster Acre also ran an excellent race. The-chief han-, dicap .went to Sea was^.recently purchased by Mr G. McMillaiT' (Auckland) from Air 11. F. NicSlL* The Novil Brighton maiden Daytime, - justi-‘ fied the confidence of backers’ in the Trial, and Trampfast gave Mr W. T. Lowe his third successive win by a comfortable victory in the slowness, trotters’ race.
