CENSUS RETURNS.

SOUTH CANTERBURY FIGURES. SOME INTERESTING DETAILS. The population of the whole of South Canterbury, according lo the census .iust taken, is 29,350 Europeans and IS7 Maoris, a total of 29,537. The inhabited European dwellings in South Canterbury number 6646, and Maori dwellings 130. while dwellings with the occupants absent at census time totalled 173. Timaru borough has a population of 15,170 persons, including seven Maoris. For the purpose of taking the census Timaru borough was divided into four wards, north, west, central and south. The northern boundary comprised the north side of Wai-iti Road, and all that part of the borough north of it. The west included LeCren Street, North Street, Woodlands Road to Otipua Road, the borough boundary at Hassall Street corner, and along the borough boundary to Wai-iti Road. The southern area was from the sea up North Street to Woodlands Road along OHpua Road to Coonor Road, and the borough boundary back to North Street. The central ward was North Street to LeCren Street, through to Wai-iti Road, with the sea on the east side. In the northern area figures show that with 60S dwellings the population is 2,557, an average of 4 1-5 to each dwelling, and in the west portion.it is the same percen'age with a population of 3,520, the number of dwelling houses totalling 316. The percentage in the centra? area is 4 1-3, with 971 dwelling-houses, and a population' of 4,259. The southern portion, with a population of 4,534, and 1014 dwellings has an average of 4if persons per dwelling, and the average for the borough is 4.45. Eighty-three dwellings wore unoccupied on census night, owing to the inhabitants being out of town. This would account lor approximately 37 4 of the population, on on average of 4J persons to each house.
