THE GLEN-ITI FIRE.

To the Editor of the .“Timaru Herald.” Sir, —Hi reference to the report in your paper of the 27tli inst., about the inquiry Held in connection with the loss by fire of my dwelling at Glcn-iti, I feel I should make clear to the public a few things iii connection therewith. The Victoria Insurance Coy’s, solicitor, Mr Campbell, appears to think that Mr and Mrs Carll have, the better of transactions made with me, and the Magistrate, Mr Mosley, considers that I need , a solicitor, presumably to see that "T am hot ’ “fleeced” by anyone. My solicitors are a" local firm, whom I have every confidence in, but in fairness to Mr and 'Mrs Carll, in whom I also have every confidence, I desire to state that in all dealings I have had with them, I have had no cause for complaint, and, if a squaring up was necessary, 1 would certainly come out on the right side of the ledger, as Mr and Mrs Carll have been strictly honest and very '-iberal in all their transactions with me. I think I should be quite capable to judge in these matters. Mr and Mrs Carll have never asked me to tako over the mortgage on theih home, much less asking me to pay it off for them. When Mrs Carll went to my house on the evening of the fire it was to show a boy, a son of a friend of hors, the new home they were 1o shift into ihe next day. The boy could have boen called as a witness to prove that statement, but the boy was not called at the inquiry. With regard to the tins found in the debris, 1 wish to state that no mention of these would have been made had not a man told Miami Mrs Carll, and this at some time after the fire, that buildings had been known to be burnt by placing a certain thing in a tin of water. I cannot sco because Mrs Card, or anyone else, for that matter, cares t.o discuss the probable cause of a fire, that that could be called suspicious. The fact of Miami Mrs Carll helping me to search for-tius-in the debris, after they'had been told how a fire may have been started, is propf enough for mo that they were out to find the cause, of the outbreak, if at all possible. iam well able to look after my own affairs, and desire to tako this opportunity of publicly thanking Mr and Mrs Carll for the. many acts of kindness shown to me. —I am. etc., .TAMES MEDLTCOTT. . G ien-iti, April 27.
