CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. By Telegraph—--Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, April 30. The Kawatiri’s cargo of potatoes arrived in Sydney in good condition, considering the early stage of the season. A proportion was spotted, but it was smaller than was feared. It is reported that the potatoes are selling at from £ll t'o £l2 per ton. The market at the moment is. weaker, but the present rain will delay digging for a time, and prices may firm. The rain, however, will benefit the potatoes otherwise. Quotations are from £'s 2s Od to £5 os on trucks. Inquiries are freer from the north, but all business is for immediate needs. Owing to the high‘prices ruling for onions, consumption has substantially decreased. Quotations are from £l2 to £l3, on trucks. Tbe oat market is lifeless, and 3s 6d, on'trucks, for A grade Gartoiis, and 3s Id for 13 grade covers values.. The offerings of white oats arc light, and tins quantity of stacks' to be seen in the country points to most farmers waiting to see what the winter will do in the chaff market. Large quantities of white clover are offering, mostly of good .sample. .1 lom 9d to lOd on trucks is all that merchants will offer. A little of the briskness has worn oil the pea- market. Most of the peas ure soft in condition, and will need time to mature them for export. Sales on trucks have been made during the “squeeze” at up to 6s 9d a- bushel, and 8s Is reported in one or two cases, f.0.b., s.i., shippers are losing money on these prices. • * This afternoon it was authoritatively reported that merchants were buying wheat at. 7s a bushel. Two of the eases' mentioned were on trucks. -Vs far as can be ascertained, the purchases so far l'or. milling and fowl feed, and tlio reservation for seed wheat (half a million bushels) represent about three million bushels, which would leave close on two million bushels still in farmers’ and merchants’ hands.

The Department of Agriculture lias received the following cablegram, dated 28th instant, from the High Commissioner, London: — The wool sales opened yesterday with good general competition. Chief support for medium and coarse crossbred ir.ine from the Continent. Compared w ith last closing rates, merino and fine crossbred were par to 5 per cent, better, medium- and coarse crossbred 5 per cent, lower. The total available for the series was 142,000 bales, ■IB,OOO New Zealand, 03,000 Australian and 27,000 South American.
