THE DENTAL CLINIC.

WELCOME TO NURSES.

There was a. large and representative attendance at the Main School on 'llmrsday evening, when opportunity. was taken by the South Canterbury School Committee;; Association to welcome to r l imam the two recently appointed .Dental Nurses, Misses Smith and Eisher, who are to take charge ol the dental clinic which has been established at the Alain School. The president (Mr 0. Bcustead) saicl it was gratifying to see such a largo attendance, which included the Mayor (Mr G. j. Wallace), the chairman, of the Hospital . Board (the Rev. T. W. Eotts), the president of the Tiiliaru I’luukct Society (Airs J. P. Newman), the secretary of the Timaru Women’s .Citizens' Association (Airs W. Eosscy), the president of the Timaru Labour Party (Air G. T. Koller), and Hr. Cox, who was particularly interested in dental work. The Alain School Committee, with permission from the Department, generously placed a room at the disposal of the Association, which was called upon to furnish the clinic, apart from the necessary apparatus for the nurses’ work. Altogether they were indebted to the tune of about £'6o, a sum he hoped would soon be realised. Modern, science pointed cut that health was largely dependable on the teeth. The nurses would commence with the younger children, who would be attended to throughout the standards until they left school. The results which would accrue from the. establishment of such a clinic could be of nothing but great value to the community.

The Alavor expressed pleasure at being present at the welcome to the nurses, who, on behalf of the citizens of the town, lie officially welcomed to their new sphere of usefulness amongst the younger generation. Ho congratulated the School Committees’ Association in bringing Timaru into line with other towns, as far as tho establishment of a dental clinic was concerned, as nothing but good could conic of the venture.

Tho Rev. T. W. Potts said that it was gratifying to see such tangible results in the establishment of the clinic. Since his association with the Hospital Board he had been deeply interested in the dental work of tho institution, and when lie heard that nurses were being sent out, lie thought it would be an excellent idea to have two stationed at Timaru. Air Gibb had been urging in this direction for some time, and no doubt- would now be pleased with the achievement. He was of opinion that it would not bo many vears before the nurses would be under ‘ the management of .Hospital Boards, and felt certain that ratepayers would lace such a problem with gratification. Airs J P. Newman (PlunkotSociety), Airs \Y. Eossey (Women Citizens), Hr. Cox (New Zealand Dentists’ Association), Air B. H. Low (Headmasters’ Association), and Air G. T. Roller (Labour Party) also added their quota- of welcome to the muses, and assured them of all the assistance and lieip possible. Air' AV.- Gibb said that the parents of Timaru should take a greater mteiest in the affairs of the schools as tliev could do no end of good by then loyalty and support. He' hoped that now that the .scheme for the . benefit of the children was on the rails, it would' rum smoothly, with the assistance of the parents, and become a nronourtccd,, success.., (Applause). Nurse Eisher, on ■ behalf of liei colleague and- herself returned thanks tor the cordiality with which they had been received. . . , , During the evening .musical uiiimopis were given .by :-Main School v Dnmi and 'Eifc.
