CAGE CRASHES DOWN SHAFT. By Cable—Preii Association —Copyright { Australian and N.Z. Cabla Association. (Received March 16, 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, March 15. A shocking disaster occurred at Thorne colliery, in Doncaster. Six men in a cage were concreting the face of the shaft, when the rope broke and the cage crashed 220 feet and plunged into water. The men pinned under the wreckage were drowned like rats in traps. Heroic rescuers were powerless.
