PLEASANT POINT.

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. - BREAIv-UP AND PRIZE' DISTRIBUTION. The annual break-up ceremony was largely- attended by parents and friends, but was somewhat marred by unpleasant weather, which, however, kept passabls’ fine while the sports programme was being run off. The headmaster had organised a very fine prograinmo of events for all classes and ages. A cross-country race was specially interesting, and produced a promising performer in C. Arras, who won this event and also the mile open, along with other minor events. At the conclusion of the sports programme, a move was made to the shelter of the schoo', where tho prizes were distributed. Mr AV. B. Oborn, chairman of the School Committee, in a few well-chosen remarks welcomed the gathering, and thanked parents and friends for their loyal support during the year. The annual report of the inspectors, which was up to tho usual high standard, showed that tho headmaster and staff had rendered excellent scrvjcc. On behalf of the committee, he thanked them sincerely, and also congratulated the scholars upon their year’s work. Ho called upon the Revs. Falconer and McPherson to address them. . Rev. G. D. Falconer said that beyond wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, he would not keep them long in the wet aiid. cold. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. At a meeting of the directors of the Caledonian Society there were present— Messrs Nelligan (president), Bowman,, J. Hall, Tennant, Blissett, Evans,' Dossett, King, Brown, Simmons, and McCarthy (hon. secretary). An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr Jas. Stewart. On the motion of the president, Messrs L. Lawrenson and G. Crozier were unanimously elected life) members of the Society. Mr McCarthy gave notice to move at the next meeting that the resolution authorising a charge for vehicles, on sports day bo rescinded. Mr F. T. Barker, hon. secretary, Timaru Motor-Cycle Club, wrote, giving further particulars of motor-cycle ovents, balloon bursting competition, | and surf boarding, stating that each event would occupy tat least fifteen I minutes.

Mr J. Kennedy advised his inability to act as referee owing to absence in Dunedin at the Athletic Union conference. —It was decided to ask Mr Clias. Hall, Timaru, to fill the position. Mr Jas. Waldie- wroto accepting the position of handic-apper for athletic events.

The secretary reported that Miss Double had kindly offered to again conduct a soft drinks stall. Miss Double’s assistance was gratefully accepted. Mr Bowman offered a quantity of ice cream for this stall, which was accepted with thanks. It was resolved to have the stall shifted under the trees and repaired. Mr J. Hall undertook to do the necessary mowing prior to the sports. Donations were reported from Messrs T. Conkn, Alex.. Sutherland, Jas. Connell. W. H. Batchelor, and Andrew Miller.

Another meeting of directors -was held on December 14th. Present— Messrs Nelligan (president), Stewart, J. Hall, Brown, Tennant, Dossett, Blissett, Evans, King. Murphy, Bowman, Simmons, and McCarthy. An apology was received from Mr E. 0. Shaw on account of illness. A motion of sympathy with Mr Shaw was passed unanimously.

In accordance with notice given, Mr McCarthy moved that the resolution authorising a gate charge for vehicles on sports day bo rescinded. This was seconded by Mr Dossett, and carried. A motion, that non-members bo charged Is for vehicles, was lost. No charge will therefore bo made for vehicles.

Mr G. H. Bryant, Geraldine, wrote accepting the catering rights. The secretary, Temnka Pipe Band, advised that the Band would bo in attendance at *f.c sports as usual. It was reported that the eye’e track was now in splendid order. It was decided that the sports commence at 12.J0 p.m. Foil arrangements were made for the dance after the sports. Donations were reported from Messrs Mcllwrick, J. O’Connor, W. J. Clark, T. G. Aston, and Jas. Stewart. GRAMOPHONE RECITAL. On Thursday last a gramophone recital was given bv the Thoreau family in the Public Hall. The proceeds were given towards the Christmas cheer of the Timaru Orphanages. Unfortunately the weather was very 7 uninviting, but

nevertlieless quite a good attendance turned out to bear a concert from the world’s star artists. At the conclusion of the programme, the Rev. G. D. Falconer, on behalf of tire Presbyterian people, heartily thanked tho organisers for their help towards the Christmas fund of their orphanage. The programme had. been a revelation to them all, and had brought to them the- best talent in the world. The beautiful decorations on the stage showed that no stone bad been left unturned to make the concert a success.
