The circumstances surrounding the death of Ernest Thomas White, who was crashed to death through a wheel of a heavy motor lorry passing over him on the main To Awamutu-Hamiltou road, a. man named Cook having both legs broken at the same time, were inquired into by the Coronor Mr Wyvern Wilson,," S.M. A charge against the motor driver, Charles Leonard Davis, of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor vehicle, and by an act in relation thereto causing the death of White, was taken in conjunction by Justices. t A heavy lorry owned by limes and 1 Co., Brewers, Hamilton, was returning from Te Awamutu racecourse laden with empty beer barrels. When nearing Ohaupa the lorry met with a mishap. Whether it struck a rut or skidded on the side of the road is not clear. Several men who were riding on barrels were thrown out. A rear wheel of the weighty vehicle passed over Vihite, frightfully mangled him and! killed him instantly. C-'ook had-both legs broken, and another passenger only rolled away in time, the wheel passing over his coat and flattening a till of tobacco in a pocket. The evidence at the inquest showed tlmr, drinking had been goiilg on among some of the members of the party while on the return to Hamilton. The coroner found that White met his death from shock, caused through being run over by a lorry driven by Davis; and further, that his death was’ due to reckless negligence on the part of Davis, who was in a state of intoxication at the time. Davis was committed for trial.
