TEMUKA BOYS’ HOME.
The annual ceremony in connection with the school break up took place on Thursday afternoon. Tile inclemency of the weather prevented the public from attending in large numbers, but Teinuka was well represented by some of its leading citizens. Besides _the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mia Cartwright) there were present Mr l . Gunnion (ex-Mayor), Mr Smith (chauman of the Tcmuka School Committee), Mr Clements, Mr and Mrs Butler, Mi Jvevs, and Mrs Tilbrook. Before the Mayor presented the prizes he congratulated the bo}*> on their year's good work as shown by the excellent results attained at their haul examination. Ho stressed the necessity oi prosecuting their studies. He said that some of them would be visiting
the Dunedin Exhibition, and oil then return home would be able to impart the knowledge gained, to those who were less fortunate. He paid a 'tribute to the two boys, Donovan and Donah} , who were first and second respectively in their class at the Temuka D.H.S., where they both obtained 80 per coiil. of the possible marks at the lina.l examination. He then presented the medals to the .successful pupils, and the proficiency and competency certificates to Standard G. on their attainments. This school, he Mr Smith congratulated the boys on their attainments. This school, lie said, was a private school, but it seemed to him that its high state ol efficiency and the quality of the instruction were equal to any of our public schools. The senior pupils opened the proceed-
jugs by singing, “Whore hath Scotland Found" Her Fame?” Other items which were highly appreciated by the audience were: “Home, Dear Home,” and mi action song entitled “Bonny Scotland.” Commandant Avenell thanked the Mayor for presiding at their school function, and paid a tribute to the other leading citizens who had braved the elements to witness the proceedings. He enumerated the merits of the different pupils, especially of the two bovs attending the Toinuka D.H.S. “It affords me great pleasure,” he said, “to be in charge of boys whose personal aliilitv, guided by efficient teachers, enables some of them to take a leading place, not only in the primary school, hut also in their classes at the , secondary school” He concluded hv pay- j ing a tribute to the present staff at the school.
