MINE EXPLOSION.
DISASTER IN STAFFORDSHIRE. SEVEN LIVES LOST. By Cable—-Press Association—Copyright. Keuter’s Telegrams. Received Dec. 20, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 19. An explosion in the Birchenwood colliery, Staffordshire, occured when the afternoon shift was still below ground. Fire followed the explosion. Rescuers , rushed to the scene and worked heroically all night. They saved all except seven men, the body of one of whom was brought'up this morning. Rescue efforts were later abandoned owing to the rapid spread of the fire.
