Twenty thousand people watched Princess Mary, at Birkenhead, try three times to break a bottle of champagne on the bows of tho Rodney. The bottle was suspended by a silken cord from the prow. The first time the Princess threw very gently, the bottle bouncing back unharmed; on the second occasion she threw more forcibly, but missed the huge target; at the third attempt, amid thunderous applause, she succeeded.

The platform on which a number of women wore accommodated, collapsed. Several minor injuries were attended to by ambulance men who were in readiness.
