DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. breaking-up ceremonies. I f The annual breaking-up ceremonies and distribution of prizes in connection irith the Waimate District High School took place on Wednesday. The secondary pupils receivod their awards at the school in tho morning, while the Olympia Hall, kindly lout for the occasion, was used for tho scholars of tho primary department. The morning function was presided over by Mr I. Fitch (chairman of tho High School Board of Governors), who apologised lor the absence of Air J. Bitchenor, M.P., and tho Mayor (Air G. Dash.) In his opening remarks, Mr Fitch said that to some of them the time between the prize-giving seemed to slip by with alarming rapidity. His only regret that day was that the Rector (Mr L. F. Pegler) was unable to be with them. However, Airs Pegler was present. (Applause.) To those ending their school career, Air Fitch wished every success, and felt sure the teaching they had received would be of great assistance to them, not only from a scholastic point of view, but also as to the moulding of then- characters. To those coming back to school next year, lie wished a happy holiday. He congratulated the prize-winners, and olfered his condolence to the losers, adding that if there wero no losers, there would bo no winners. Air Fitch also took the opportunity of warmly congratulating the pupils responsible lor tho production, for the first time, of a school magazine. (Applause.) Canon Cocks, in an appropiato speech, asked those who were leaving to go away to their work with the idea that they took the reputation of the school with them, and to let tho memory of the school be a good one. Ho wished them all a Alerry Christmas and a pleasant vacation. The prizes were then presented by Airs Pegler. Happy, smiling faces were to be seen in the Olympia Hall, when the primary scholars assembled for the last time this year. Proceedings opened with a concerted item (“The Barefoot Trial’’) by the school children, after which Rita Freeman recited. The chairman of tho school committee (Mr R. B. Hurst) congratulated the prize-winners, and suggested that they should get their mates to write their names in their books. He wished them all a pleasant holiday, and then asked Airs Hurst to present tho prizes. The medals won at the Waimate Sub-Union’s seven-a-side tournament kere handed over, on behalf of the Union, by Air G. S. Meredith, who also gave each medallist a substantial box of chocolates. Canon Cocks presented the scripture prizes.; A vote of thanks to the. donors of special prizes was carried with acclama-; tion, and cheers were given for the teachers, the ceremony being brought to a close with a verse of the National Anthem.
