It is expected that the Council of the League of Nations at Geneva today, will come to the unanimous decision assigning Mosul to Iraq, and fixing the British mandate for 25 years, terminable earlier if Iraq has been established sufficiently to enter the League. “The Morning Post’s” correspondent states that should Turkey threaten, she will be told that aggression will he construed as a declaration of war against the League.

Further evidence of the atrocities in Mosul are contained in an addition to General Leidonner’s report. The Commissioners place the responsibility on the shoulders of tho 62nd regiment of Turkish Infantry. They depict the horrors of forced and hurried deportations and massacres, and relate incidents of women being violated and burned alive under stones. In the State of Baijo alone, forty men were taken :'f om their families and assassinated in remote buildings by Turkish soldiers, who were anxious not to be disturbed during the orgies. Columns were marched six to ten days without food, several falling out and being immediately massacred. The Commissionera draw attention to the fact that Christians were not illtreated by Kurds, who protested to the Turks and refused Turkish or'ders to massacre the deportees, whereupon the Turks shot several Kurdish chiefs. A number of Kurdish and Moslem chiefs on the frontier expressed the desire to be placed .'Within Iraq frontiers, to procure their safety. (The Council of the League of Nations authorised General Leidonner, j of Esthonia; to inquire into the allegations as to the deportation of Christians from Mosul by the Turks.) MILITARY SITUATION EXAMINED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. GENEVA, December 15. It is recognised that Tewiik Bey signally failed in his Paris visit. He found French Foreign Office oipinion so unconeiliatory that ho decided that it would be useless to await M. Briand’s return, and concentrated on influencing M. Tchitchevin to support Turkey in the event of the militarists carrying out their determination to suddenly swcop on the Iraq frontier, m an attempt to frighten the weaker members of the League before tho Council definitely decides the issue. SHAPING TOWARDS SETTLEMENT. TURKISH OBSTINACY SOFTENING. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association* , GENEVA, December 15. Matters appear to be shaping towards a settlement of tbe obstinately contested Mosul question, between Britain and Turkey.
