N.Z. NEWSPAPERS.

COAIMENDED BY HON. AV. P. REEVES. The Hon. AV. P. Reeves’s work as a journalist in Christchurch some 35 years ago led him, when he was interviewed in Christchurch on Tuesday,' to speak of newspapers in this Dominion. He finds that the dailies have grown prodigiously in size since he helped to write them, and have improved almost out of sight in methods of gathering and presenting news. He said that Airs Reeves and he, after their experiences with many or the newspapers in North America and Canada, remarked on arrival in Auckland: “‘Thank God we have come to a country where newspapers are decently written for educated people.” He did not speak of metropolitan newspapers in North America and Canada, but the relief after reading the newspapers of the large provincial towns there was almost unspeakable. In a town of 300,000 or 401),000, larger than any New Zealana centre, there would not be found a single newspaper that com, pared in breadth of view, catholicity and interest, or in taste in writing, with tb ; r_.Maminion’s newspapers. In Ins upiiiion, the best English newspapers still are the best in the world. He named particularly “The Times,” the “Daily Telegraph,” and the “Post,” and said that the “Daily Telegraph,” for the middle-of-the-road, honest conservative view of tilings, could not be beaten.

Speaking of New Zealanders in journalism in the Old Country, lie said that the position held by Air Hnrohl Williams, a son of the Rev. AV. J. AYi 1 - Hams, of Christchurch, as Foreign Editor of “The Times,” was a responsible one, which any nian might be proud to hold. It was never known what, an editor had written in his paper. Imt articles which, he believed, came from Air Williams's own pen were exceptionally well written ; and Air Williams certainly was a very pleasant man to meet.
