YOUN MAN DROWNED. B 7 Telegraph—Pres* Association, DARGAVILLE, December 15. A young Maori, known as Chris White, lost his life in attempting to swim the northern Wairoa River, at what is known as O’Shea’s crossing this morning. It appears that he was swimming to his boat on the opposite side of the river. When half way across he sank. A companion, ; named Tuhiwai, swam out to his assistance, but could find no trace. BLASTING FATALITY. , -By Teleernph—Press Association ASHBURTON, December 15. The victim of the Rakaia Gorge fatality was William Toner, married (51). with nine children, whose home was at Stanmore Road, Christchurch. He was emploved as a roadman by the Pwblic Works Department, and with another man was engaged in blasting rock. A piece was blown 90 yards, struck the road and ricochetted, striking Toner on the head. His companion, Bryonton, had a narrow escape.

WIREMAN RECEIVES SHOCK. By Teleeraph—Press Association. MARTON, December 15. Norman Thompson, employed by the Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Board, had a remarkable escape from death at Turakina yesterday. When working aloft, near a high tension wire, he made contact, and the shock caused him to topple. ' His foot caught in a- stay wire, and Thompson was suspended in mid-air. head downwards. Mr Brooke, foreman, saw Thompson just in time to scale the ladder and rescue him. Thompson, who has a badly burned scalp and fingers, and is also suffering from severe shock, was sent to hospital. SUDDEN DEATH. By Talejraph—Pres* Association. AUCKLAND, December 15. While driving with a friend, Enid Ewart (28), complained of reeling unwell. She was taken home immediately and thence to the hospital. She died on the way there. It is supposed that death was due to poisoning. It is stated that the deceased was in the- habit of taking certain powders.

■ CHILD BADLY BURNED. By Tf ! etrriiph--Trfiaft Association. HASTINGS, December 15. A boy aged 2} years, .son of Detective Fitzgibbon, was severely burnt on the chest, stomach and thighs last night. The child was put into a cot, and evidently reached out and took matches from a coat hanging on the wall close by, and, lighting one, set fire to his nightgown. The child’s cries attracted immediate attention. The boy was sent to hospital, where he is now in a serious condition.

QUARRY ACCIDENT ENDS FATALLY. By Telegraph—Press Association, GREYMOUTH, Dec. 15. A fatal accident occurred at the Cobden quarry at 11.40 a.m. Edward Spark, when coupling loaded trucks, was struck oil the forehead by a falling piece of rock dislodged by the impact. Spark fell unconscious, his head striking a rail, and lie sustained a fracture of the base of the skull. The injured man was removed to hospital, but succumbed a few hours later. Deceased was formerly a quartz mine manager at Jnangahua, and was a member, of Semple’s Orongongo tunnel co-operative party. He leaves a wife and thirteen of a family.
