The Pope, at a secret consistory, created four new Cardinals, namely: Dr. Patrick O’Donnell, Archbishop of Armagh. The Most. Rev. Bonaventura Cerretti, Papal Nuncio to France. Enrico Gasparri. Allessandro Verde. The Pontiff, in an allocution, dwelt on the success of the Holy Year, concerning which he said the pilgrims must have realised that the situation of the Pontiff was still far from what it should be. At present, conditions prevented him from leaving the Vatican. His Holiness expressed apprecia-
m of the efforts of the Italian Government to prevent or at least attenuate the class struggle and coordinate the nation’s activities for
’.o common good. The Pope concluded his allocution thus;—“The Catholic Church is opposed to Liberalism and Socialism, ,s heading to anarchy, but the litirch is equally opposed to politi--1 concertion whereby the State and society are aims in themselves.”
