LOST MEMORY. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 18. Last night a woman, whoso name is unknown, called at the Avondale police station, saving she wanted a place to sleep. She was unable to give her name or residence. The request was acceded to. Tiffs morning she had not rcgainod her memory, and is now .being cared for bv the Salvation Army.

The death occurred in hospital last night of Cecil Dane Shepherd, a labourer, aged 33, who fell from Winstone’s jetty, Custom’s Street West, into the water, yesterday morning. Deceased, who was partially blind; was employed as a labourer at the Blind Institute at Parnell. He had been delivering goods, and _ was standing at the end of the jetty, when he tripped and fell 12 feet on to a cargo of telegraph poles on the deck of the scow Hero. He rolled into three feet of water. He was rescued by a seaman from the scow and was taken to the hospital, where death ensued. DEATH IN DENTAL SURGERY. By Tnw»rTaT>v> rrosv Asuccf ntlon. CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. Madeline Monica Doyle, aged sixteen years, collansed and died after having been placed under gas' in a denial surgery- at Rangiora this morning. She was, to all appearances, quite strong and well, and game out of the gas normally, but almost immediately afterward she collapsed and died. Doctors used artificial respiration for an hour without avail. Miss Doyle underwent an operation at Lewisham Hospital two months ago, but made a good recovery-.

ii INQUEST AT FAIRLIE

On Saturday the District Coroner (Mr E. D. Mosley) held an-inquest at Fairlie, touching the death of Miss Marion Wood (21), which occurred in the Fairlie Hospital on Thursday last. Evidence was given by- Mrs Wood (mother of the deceased), and by Drs. Loughnnn and Harty. The Coroner went into the circumstances surrounding the death, exhaustively, and his verdict was that death was due to uncontrollable bemmorrhage from an abscess on the liver, and was in any way due to the anaesthetic which had been administered.

The patient came out of the anaesthetic, but subsequently bled to death.
