BIG FAMILY.

EQUALLING A TOWN. Imagine a family which requires 1,000 gallons of milk per day! You mothers and you darners of socks and stockings what think you of 14,600 holes to be darned every week and 7,300 pairs of boots to be mended frequently, and all too frequently ' if the children are healthy and full of vigour as children should be? This family would fill 18 churches each seating 4 00. Thirty-six trains carrying 200 in each would be required to transport this family. The family to which we refer is the Barnardo family consisting of 7,300 children, and to realise its size you must.think of a town with 1,460 houses with the average family of five in each; 7,300 is a fair-sized town. It is more than double the population of the town of Buckingham in England, and of the ancient borough of Cardigan in Wales, and is double the population of Dunbar in Scotland. It equals the population of the Cathedral Cities of Ely in England, and Armagh in Ireland. It about equals Fremantle (east and north) in Australia; Pembroke in Ontaria, Canada; Grahamstown (European) in South Africa; the British population in Hong Kong; and it almost equals the town of Nelson in New Zealand. Imagine running a town of 7,300! Imagine feeding a towm of that size! Dr. Barnardo’s Homes are making their annual appeal for half-crowns to feed their big family. They appeal for birthday gifts in memory of the founder, the late Dr. Barnardo, the man with the great heart, who loved little children. Last year 444,146 half-crowns were sent in by 67,361 generous friends all over the world, and we are asked to make the needs of this family known to all lovers of little children.

Cheques, bankers’ drafts, orders and postal notes, should be made payable to “Dr. Barnardo’s Homes Founder’s Fund,’’ and addressed to Dr. Barnardo’s Hornes, 18-26 Stepney Causeway, London, E.I.
