Yet the flat “Low-Pressure Tread” shows 22% more road contact than the other. By distributing the weight, the-low pressure tread lessens the pressure on each tread block. I.—-Prevent* Early and Uneven Tread'wear. Careful study by the United States Rubber Co’s, engineers demonstrated that the round tread on most high pressure tyres is impracticable for Balloon tyres.' The peculiar shape a round-tread Balloon tyre takes when under load and moving, and the consequent working of these parts of the tread on which the weight is concentrated causes the tread to wear in two bands, one on each side of the centre of the tyre. This makes the tread wear unevenly and quickly. 2.—Gives 22% More Road Contact. The new flat Tread with its flat contour gives 22% greater area of r6ad contact. Because of this better load distribution there is much less tread distortion and tread movement two factors which add to early tread wear in round tread Balloon Tyres. 3.—Better Non-Skid Protection because the flexible outer row of tread blocks is in full contact with the road. 4.—-Easier Steering With the New Flat Treads REAL BALLOON CUSHIONING. But above all the new Flat "Low Pressure" Tread permits running the tyre on the low inflation necessary to give real Balloon Tyre cushioning—without causing early, uneven and disfiguring tread wear. This is of great importance because a few. pounds increase, even four or five pounds, in air pressure jh a Balloon Tyre will.grpatly effect its riding quality and comfort.
