The inquiry at Wanganui into the 6tramling of the steamer Cyrena was continued . yesterday. The proceedings will he continued to-day. A contractor who is building a bridge inland from Moumahaki. has his camp near a small patch of native bush. He stated that the native bird life was remarkable. All night they heard the call of the khvi. and in the early mornings pigeons, bellbirds, tuis, and a. number of the smaller birds were plentiful. Another famous man of loiters, JiulwerLytton, wrote (see his novel. “What will ho do with it?”) : “Ho who doth not .smoko hath cither known rr> greater grief, or rofuseth himself the Boftest consolation next to that which comes from heaven.” As to tho harmfulness of the habit much —very much—depends upon the tobacco. Brands heavily charged with nicotine arc herd avoided. Tn that respect and in other respects onr own New Zealand grown tobaccos hold pride of place, because they contain comparatively little nicotine and may therefore b > indulged in ad. lib., without affecting nerves or heart. Doubtless that is why they are finding favour with so many smokers. They arc on sale everywhere, and are adapted to all tastes. “Riverhcad Gold” is mild aromatic, “Toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog) a delightful medium, and “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bull's Head label) a fine full-flavoured tobacco.
