A historic joint session of the two Houses unanimously passed an amendment to the Constitution whereby Afrikaans, a localised form of Dutch, is declared the official language of the Union. Dutch members warmly tributed the sympathetic co-operation ot their English colleagues. They expressed a hope that it was the beginning of a new era of understanding.
