(From Our Own Correspondent.)

BUSINESS MEN’S ASSOCIATION,

Thero was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Business Men’s Association, over whom tho Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy) presided. A letter from thei Tourist Department, in answer to a request that GerI aldino should' be listed as a health and tourist resort, suggested that the Asi sociation should send a short account of | the beauties, et.i., round about Geralj dine, witii ether useful information, 1 and stated that the- Christchurch.- agent ! would have pleasure m advising . tho different tourist bureaux of the particulars forwarded. —It was agreed to have tho necessary particulars compiled and forwarded. The report of the Advertising Committee confirmed' tho ■ action of the secretary (Mr J. B. Stewart), relative to tho invitation to Mr Climia, secretary of the Canterbury Progress League, and Chamber of Commerce. Tho committee agreed that the Tour-, ist Department be asked-to embody Geraldine pictures and literature in their exhibit at the Dunedin Exhibition, and that suitable photographs be taken and enlarged for the purpose. It was agreed that tho fact be advertised that private cars from the north can save 34 miles by using Geraldine as tho most convenient stopping place on tho way to Mount Cook; that Geraldine’s desirability as a residential district for retired people be advertised; that inquiries bo made as to the cost of advertisements, that estimates of tho cost of booklets bo obtained'. It was also recommended that a carnival be held with an entertainment at night. Individual support of the proposals was urged, and the following slogan was suggested: “People of. Geraldine district, spend your money in your own town.” Relative to the Dunedin Exhibition, tho opinion was expressed that the Borough Council should' undertake the work of having the district represented and it was agreed to donate £o for t-liis purpose. Mr G. T. [WiHon, of tho Commercial Department, New Zealand Railways, AVellington, and Mr Grigg, Commercial Business Agent) New Zealand Railways, Dunedin, attended the meeting, and were welcomed by the chairman.

Mr Wilson said that reductions were made in freights, and it was necessary to ensure that the railways did the carrying business. To this end they were conferring with the carriers. Ho stated that in the North Island the carriers had in every case fallen in with their suggestions.

Mr "Wilson "was asked a number of questions, and in reply said that the reduced freights from Timaru to Orari were not likely to bo increasod. In order to mako better arrangements for tho trucking of sheep at Orari, it was proposed to place a gate at the north end of tho railway yard. The erection of a more conspicuous notice at Orari that it is the stopping place for Geraldine would be considered. It was intended to arrange an oxcursion to .Dunedin in connection with tho exhibition. On goods being sent from Timaru to Orari by rail, etep3 would bo taken to secure their delivery as promptly as if sent by road. Through bookings for passengers would be arranged and steamer berths secured if two days’ notice wore given. They wore out to give service and asked for the public co-operation. The visitors were thanked- for their attendance.
