VALEDICTORY.
MB H. D. BENNETT FAREWELLED. v At the Timaru Courthouse yesterday rooming, the Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) presided over a gathering of members of the police force and Court staff, assembled to farewell Mr H. D. Bennett (oourt bailiff and crier of the Supreme Court), who has been transferred on promotion, .to. Dunedin. i'.\The Magistrate said lie was sorry the occasion had risen to part from an old and valued friend. Personally, he, regretted Mr Bennett’s departure, but on the other hand he congratulated him on his well deserved The Magistrate then a&ked sMr Bennett to accept a silver mounted umbrella and .other tokens of the esteem in which he was held by the members of both branches of the service. .■ ‘Senior Sergeant Fahey, on behalf of the police force, said he-regretted M r .Bennett’s departure, as they were the two oldest members of the force and staff respectively, and. had-always been the ,hest>;of. friends. He hoped that Mr and Mrs Bennett would enjoy them- ! selves in Dunedin. .. - • Mr A. E. Reynolds (Clerk of the Court) . said it had been a pleasure to serve with a man of Mr Bennett’s calibre. They felt it keenly having to sever their connection with Mr 1 Bennett, and onjbehalf of the. staff he wished him every happiness and prosperity in his, new position. Mr E. Graham and Constable Fisher endorsed the remarks’,of the previous ''speakers. In returning thanks, Mr Bennett said that during his thirteen years of service in Timaru they had,.been a ; happy family, and although it meant promotion for him, lie, in a, sense, regretted, leaving Timaru. When in the North Island he had been told that the further south., one went, the i bettor were the. people, but’ he was : sure they could not be better than the people of Timaru.
