The decision of a section of the Trades Unions, to declare Walsh Island'"black” has had. littlje effect upon the progress of work at the dockyards. Yesterday, the Minister of Works (Mr Ball) received an official notification that there were moi;e men at work than in the previous day.

Mr Ball stated that no increase n, wages would be given the strikers. The men had a legal remedy and would have to abide by the law. Jacob Johannsen . appeared at the Police Court on a charge of counselling certain people to strike. Jobannisen, who is acting secretary of the Seamen’s Union, pleaded not/ guilty. The action arose out of the holding up of the steamer Levuka. The hearing was adjourned I to May 1.

The Federal Government' had just agreed to a 15,000 ton instead of a 13,000 toii dock, and had increased its subsidy from ,£T2O,OQp to £135,000. It was exCi-emely unfortunate, said Mr Ball, that men should carry on like that, when it' Was realised that .the Government- for some' time- past had been endeavouring to place -the dockyards on a much better footing than before.
