The City of Sydney Band has decided to compete at the Exhibition Band Contest, to be held at the Dunedin Exhibition.

The annual election of school committees will take pface throughout South Canterbury to-night. The meetings commencing at 7.30.

The Theatre -Royal was crowded last evening when an enjoyable concert was given by professional artists. The reason that, there were only two nominations for two vacancies on the Timaru Harbour Board, (ast week was explained by Mr G. T. Dawson at the meeting of the Harbour Board on Friday last. Mt Dawson stated that the fault was his. His nomination had been ready but he was under the’ impression that nominations did not close till 5 p.m. on Monday last,. whereas they closed at noon. It was agreed that as soon as the Timaru Borough Council nominates a man for the vacancy the Bqard will apply to the Governor-in-Council to appoint him. ■

As the result of representations made to Mr T. D. Burnett M.P.,*by members of the Temuka District High School Committee, as to the need for an open-air infant classroom at the school, Mr Burnett appro,ached the Minister of Education for a departmental subsidy towards the building. On Friday last Mr Burnett received;. a wire from the Minister promising £2OO on a £1 for ! £1 basis, provided the Committee found the other £2OO. In reply to a query from Mr Burnett ,as to when the Minister was likely to visit South Canterbury, as he was desirous of bringing some matters of importance under the Minister’s notice, Sir James Panreplied:—“l hoped to have been able to visit the district in May, but I am unable to say anything definite. Much will depend upon the infantile paralysis epidemic. As soon as lam in a position to say when I shall be in your district I shall let you know.”

A notice in the “New Zealand Gazette” qays that the shooting season for native and imported game will open on May 1, and will close on July 31, unless otherwise specified in tbo warrant fixing the open season in any district. The birds that it will be permissible to shoot in the South Canterbury Acclimatisation district are: Mallard, grey and spoonbill duck, black teal, black swan, and paradise duck (the latter for one week only in the Mackenzie Country). In the Waimato Acclimatisation district tho birds to be shot will be: Grey, spoonbill, and paradise ducks; black swan, and pukeko. In tho Waikiki district the birds to be shot will be: Grey duck; black swan, and paradise duck. Last year a number of those who went shooting in South Canterbury failed to fiako out a gun license. This season it is the intention of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society to prosecute all who fail to observe the law in this respect.
