HURLED FIFTY FEET.
CAR STRUCK BY ENGINE. By* Telegraph—Press Associatior PALMERSTON N.‘, April 25. A railway crossing accident of a sensational nature occurred this morning at a level crossing at Kelvin Grove. Mr R. V. Purton, a local motor car agent, was travelling in ,a new car, and had almost cleared the crossing when the rear of the vehiclo was struck with terriffic force by the foremost of two engines proceeding in the direction- of Marton. According to the enginedrivel-, the car was hurled into the air, the occupant being thrown clear, and landing on his head. A repair gang found the car fifty feet front the scene of the smash. There were no marks between where it lay and the point of impact. Purton, who .is suffering front a fractured skull, was taken to the hospital.
