THE RUNNING REVIEWED. (Special to the “Herald”). The festivities of. Carnival AVeek concluded at Kiceartoii on Saturday with the fourth clay of ...the C J,l), mooting. The weuener was fine, a light north-westerly breeze, giving an .unusual tinge of warmth to tne aunosphere. Tlie track and surroundings had been freshened up by a fall of rain during the night, and Clio- 'conditions were almost ideal trom the racing point .of view, the Stead Cup proved the good thing it locked for tub champion marc CoKl Light, v hose rider • Look every precaution to avoid Inferno setting a slow pace, ancl after a sharp tussle at the head of the straight, came away, to wm easily in very last time. The Aucklander Royal Blood cavalierly disposed of two opponents in the Electric , Plate, tne watch showing unusually good figures, and the curtain was rung down m thu Fendalton Handicap hy perhaps tne most wonclerlul finish ever witnessed on the course. GIANTKILLER AGAIN. The hack hurdle race, which formerly opened tlic last clay's card,' was tins year replaced by a high-weight handicap. A licld of sixteen was saddled, tne popular picks being Giantkiller, Hungry Hill, Prosperity, Happy Warrior and Mountain Lion. There was a good deal of delay at the harrier, Bitters and Camel Amble giving most ol llio trouble. Eventually an even start was effected, then Whariti, Prosperity and Hioro Jed out together from \ iewpomt, Empyrean any Otauru. After going a couple of furlongs AVharili drew away and led ■ound the bead lrom Prosperity, iliero, Empyrean, Otauru, Mountain Lion ad Giantkiller. At the. distance M aariti and Prosperity were together, with Otauru next, and Giantkiller travelling fast on the rails. Prosperity shot out a furlong from home, but Giantkiller also made a forward move, and waiting on the leader until fifty yards from the post, came through and won nicely oy a neck. AVbariti was two lengths behind Prosperity, then came Otauru, Happy AVarrior i ncl Micro.

AIOORLAND UNLUCK A'. The withdrawal pf Ayrhurn and Giantkiller left eleven to contest the Cressy AA'eltcr. Backers took some time to find a favourite, .Moorland, Ibe Harp and Ilka being very evenly fancied. Ultimately Moorland wound up first pick, but only in slightly 111.010 demand than ilka, 'Hie Harp am! Gardenia. Gardenia and ilka were prominent from a prompt start, and entering the course proper Ilka, Tempo, and The Harp were showing the way, tlie favourite being some distance hack 011 the outside. Ilka and The Harp wore leading a furlong from home, where .Moorland commenced a great run. In a desperate rinish Ilka won by half a head front Aloorlaml, who heat The Harp by a head, hut arrived just one stride' too late to secure first money. Halgina was a length away lourth, Finora and Ecuador being next.

DEGAGE MAKES AAIENDS. * Twenty-two hacks faced the starter in the Seymour Handicap, hut three or them —Degage, Dazzling Light, and Hallmark —almost monopolised public Attention so far as the totalisator was concerned. Degage, Knoekiyn and Ell Route were lirst to 'show out from tlie bunch, and after going a couple of furlongs Knoekiyn and Ell Route drew clear and led to the home turn from Degage. Escarpment ami Solferite. Knoekiyn was clear of Ell Route, just inside the distance, hut immediately Degage put in her claim and won comfortably by a length and a half irem Hallmark, wlio made a late run and beat En Route hy a head for .second place. Cumbrae was a length behind Tlio third horse, then came Knoekiyn ami Comic Song. Escarpment broke a hind leg when going well a fuilong irom home, and had lo he destroyed. He- was a threeyear-old colt by JLnzonian or Autumnus, and had shown good track work, which he had not been able to reproduce: in a lace. Engage was a starter in the Sirring Plate on the first day of the meeting, hut met'with serious interference ip the early stages of that race. Tlie convincing fashion in which she accounted for Dazzliim Light made it plain that »he should rave w;,n the Spring Plate.

arating Fool's Paradise- Iron: Red M’.'iik ] and .Last Cr;;-,t. Suggestion jumped j away, followed hy Mirousontr. ami ': Foci's Paradise, Fire.dick, who drew the inside running, being chopped hack last. At the end of a mrlong Alireusonta took charge from Red Wink and Suggestion, and turning into the straight the leading bunch war. composed of Alircusonta, Red Wink, Sag i gesLion. Alartain Aliss and Pencils. Red j Wink headed Alircusonta be,ore reach I ing the distance, but was soon dial- | longed bv Suggestion, wlio came on to j win by a length ami a halt, giving j Gray his first winning mount, of the i meeting. Fool s Paindisc finished \\ell I a length, and a halt behind Red A\iia, ' and Wild Hind, who wad last into the straight except .Firesl'ck, beat all the j unplaced division. I

FIRST OUT—FI RST HOME. In the .Pioneer Handicap bather O'Flvnu was a better favourite than Ah'dory Bond. Money Order got a breaic at the start, and Jed to the course proper with an advantage ol some lengths from A ietory Bond, Arpent and Father 0 Flynn. Money Order was never caught, and won by three lengths from A’ictory Bond. Arpent was a length away, half Giat rlis tance in front of the lavourjte. Centrepiece, who drew the. outside of the course, swerved at the start and ran to the inside rails. Money Order is the first galloper to be owned by Air J. R. AlcKenzic, who is better known as the owner of the pacers A cron and Great Bingen.

GOLD LIGHT'S GOLD CUP. •A small field of five paraded ior the Stead Gold Cup, but they were the best of the horses at the meeting. Gold Light, who looked the good thing or the day, was made a staunch favourite, being entrusted with /.early half the amount in the pool, with a little more fancied than Limelight. The four older horses looked well seasoned, but Inferno was fretful and lathered up a good deal in the birdcage. Inferno was first to show out, closely attended by Gold Light and Loughrea. Passing the mile post Inferno was half a length in front of Gold Light, Loughrea and Limelight being together two lengths away. These positions were maintained until lour furlongs from home, when Gold -Light drew level with Inlerno. The pair turned into the straight attended by Loughrea, and when AVaddell gave the favourite her head, she drew away and won easily by three lengths from Sunart, who finished well and heat Loughrea by a length lor second place. Inferno was a fair iourtli and Limelight last. A BRILLIANT SPRINTER.

The Aucklander Royal Blood, who was making Ins debut in the South island, was sent out an odds on chance in the Electric Plate, = ml never gave liis hackers any cause for uneasiness. Taking charge troni barrier rise, lie led oil to t.lie course proper under a nico hold, and won without being extended by two lengths trom Tukia, who defeated Shirley by a short length lor second honours. Royal Blood, who was one of the best lookers at the meeting, ran the five furlongs in 58 4-5, only a fraction outside Machine Gun’s Australasian record. He made Tukia look so cheap that it was very unfortunate for his owner that his acceptance ior the Stewards’ Handicap was bungled.

A AVHIIILAVIND FINISH

Totalisator patrons operated witu their spirit on die concluding event, the b endalton Handicap. Royal Blood's stable mate. Ruapapa was always favourite, but the admirers of Enthusiasm and T’arleton liad a great battle before the mare was installed as second' choice! Royal Divorce and Tanadees were the first pair discernible from the move-off, hut Ruapapa and Rivalry were only perceptibly behind them, and just after passing the mile post these two took charge, and at the seven furlongs mark were showing the way to Royal Divorce, Tanauees and Happy Warrior, the tad being composed of Enthusiasm, Palestrina and Alantua. At the home turn Rivalry, Ruapapa and Tanadees were being hotly pressed by Royal Divorce, Deucalion and Bonnetter. Just below the distance Ruapapa and Tanadees weakened slightly, and Deucalion joined Rivalry in front, with Royal Divorce, Ruapapa, Bonnetter, Tarleton and Enthusiasm all close up. Deucalion gained a length’s advantage commencing the last furlong, but could not hold it, ancl after a wonderful finisli, the Demosthenes gelding scraped home a head in front of Royal Divorce, who heat Rivalry by half a head with Tarleton and Ruapapa only heads away. Bonnetter, Enthusiasm and Tanadees were all on the heels of the placed horses. —The Fendalton Hamlicay has provided some exciting finishes in the past, hut never has the hanclicapper produced such a whirlwind finish as resulted between tlie first seven or eight horses.
