< MEETING OF COUNCIL

, -The monthly meeting bf 'the' W.E.A. was,field on Saturday. The Rev. W. Jellie presided over a, good attendance. The following delegates were present-*-Mr G. Hansard (Borough Council), Mr W. Bell (Literature Class), Mr Allport (Economics-Class), Mr Koher (Sociology. Class), Mr E. >V. Jones (Technical Board), Mr AV, Grant (1.0.0. F.), Mr Smith, (Wharf Workers), Mr Watson; (Drivers’ Union), Mr Stewart (Teachers’ Institute), Mr S. Lang (Labour Party), Mrs Low (WiC.T.U.), Mrs Mirams (Women Citizens), and Mr H. B.elshaw: The secretary* reported thslt 350 appeal's for financial assistance had been sent-:to influential residents, and,so far the • following gentlemen had responded Mr F. J. "Rolleston, M.P. £5, Mr H; Ridley £1 Is, Dr Ulrich £1 Is, Rev. Father Hurley £1 Is, Mr G. H. R, Ulrich £1 ,Is, Mr W. Burns £1 Is, Mr Giles £1 Is,."Mr M. J. Knubley 10s.. Ono hundred and fifty popular lecture cards had been distributed. v The chairman remarked that the lectures so far given had been ;of a high standard, and merited greater support from the public than they had received. Several • delegates considered that the .fortnightly lectures should be dropped, and, mquthly. substituted in their place, and-.a:-recommendation was given to the Lectures Committee to that effect. , . . It was decided to hold a social on July 12. As the resident tutor (Mr H. Belshaw) will be leaving for England on the 17th, all members of Council, classes and friends of the movement are urged to attend. Accounts amounting to £9 14s 3d were passed for payment. A letter was received from Mr G. Hansard, offering his services as honorary tutor of a class in elocution, and his offer was gratefully accepted; As the literature class has had to close on account of Mr Belshaw’s departure, it it was hoped that most of the. students as well as others, would- join up and make this class a success. The first elocution class will be held next Friday.

Mrs Low suggested that public readings from plays be attempted, but this was held over in she meantime. Sir H. Belshaw reported that the attendance at the Waimate- class on “International Relations” had been excellent. The session had shown an average attendance of 39. The Timaru Class on English Drama had also been very successful, with an average of 34. The chairman remarked that as this was the last meeting of the Council when Mr Belshaw would be present, he wished him every success in nis purpose to extend his knowledge, by a Collegiate course in the Old Land, which, he hoped, would later on be available for W.E.A. work in this country. His ability, thoroughness and capacity for work,' were recognised by all who had attended his classes, The Council were unanimous in their appreciation of Mr Belshaw’s work since he had been in South Canterbury,
