CAR HITS TRAIN.
PASSENGERS SERIOUSLY* , INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. ASHBURTON, June 30.' A serious accident occurred at an; Ashburton level crossing at 7 o clock on Saturday \night, when a motor occupied by five residents ol Ashb/n----'ton, crashed into the ChristchurchAshburton mixed; train. The occupants, two of whom were seriously injured., were removed to hospital. They were : Charles Ward, carrier, fractured pelvis, fracture ofith.o base of the skull, and abrasions. His condition is sen°UL, Falhvell, court bailiff, married, lacerated head. P. -J. Cossgrovc, boot salesman, single, lacerated ear. H. Davis, upholsterer, married, wounds on head. George Melville, apprentice, sixteen years, internal haemorrhage, deep out in thigh, wounds on. head, two fingers left hand crushed. Condition dangerous. . ~ , - The party was returning from a football match-at Methven.,', .the car -being driven by the owner, Mr Cossgrove. They proceeded on to the crossing, near the station yard, at the same time a? the train, which 'they apparently rid not see, was approaching. The enginedriver had given tlie usual warnings, but seeing -that the car intended :o come on, applied the emergency brakes. It was too late, however, to avert an accident. The car hit tlie train at the fourth waggon from the engine, iiid the car was reduced to a mass of wreckage. The axlebox of the waggon was smashed. Melville, wlib was working at Methven was getting a lift home for the week-end. He was thrown on to the catilo stops. Falhvell. Davis, and Orossgrove have been discharged from hospital.
