Striking evidence of the rarity of gold as a means of exchange iu ordinary commercial circles was provided bv an experience which occurred in Hamilton. A Whitiora resident, i-Tr C J. Onllen, sent a hoy to the money order office for a postal note, and the bov received a half-sovereign as pars of'the change. Ho then had to (lo Romo shoping, but not one of the tradespeople approached would accept the coin. Three of them expressed ilio opinion that it was a gilded sixpence. The resident asked whether anyone had ceen a sixpence with St. George .nd the dragon on it, and remarked that it would almost appear that gold laid not been in circulation during the ’•fe of the present generation.
