TIMARU PROGRESSES.

NEW SCHEMES LAUNCHED

IMPORTANT DECISIONS BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last evening, present—His \Vorsnip the. Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace), and Councillors P. C. Yinnell, W. G. Irwin, E. R. Guinness, J. A. Hay, J. Anstey, T. W. Sattercnwaite, j. F. Arnold, F. B. Hawkey, D. McNab, and A. M. H. Sinrtclin. The subjects of purcnasing land for the West End Park, building a new begonia house at the Timaru Park, and allocating money for improvements on the Bay ? , were discussed m committee, The sentiments expressed were almost unanimously in favour of going ahead with all three projects, and the following resolution, proposed by the Mayor, and seconded by Councillor Irwin, was carried unanimously:— “That the work of erecting the additions to Caroline Bay bathing facilities, to cost about £1500; erection of begonia house at the Park, to cost about £I6UU, be approved and authorised; and that the purchase of land for the West End Park, the cost not exceeding £SOOO, be approved; that the Council proceed to select land foi; the West End Park, and arrange a price ,to be, paid by instalments; that the necessary funds to meet the above be provided out of increased repayments by the Electric Power and Light Department, . on account of money now owing by that Department to the General Account. (The estimated increased repayments for the current year by the Electric Power and Light Department, would then be: Caroline Bay; say £ISOO, Park begonia house, £.BOO, t0ta1,,£2300). And that the Council be authorised'to pay £SOO mis year on West End Park; ■if - required ; repayments *ior next yeai would be: balance on begonia house, £80(3, first instalment Wfest End Park, £SOO, total £1300.” Councillor Shirtcliff congratulated the Mayor on the fine project he had put forward, and. said he was sure it would prove of very great benefit to Timaru.

It was decided that the Works Committee should be authorised to take the preliminary steps with regard to procuring land for the West End Park. Messrs Turnbull and Rule were appointed architects for the improvements to the bathing facilities on Caroline Bay, and Messrs Panton and Son for the begonia house. A letter was received from the Timaru Town School Committees’ Association inviting the Council to be present at a lecture to be given shortly in Timaru under the auspices of the Association.

It was decided that individual Councillors who could attend, should do so.
