Fifteen thousand witnessed the thrilling finish. Hagen made a dogged fight after the first round of 74. He took forty-one going out in the second round. Then came the news of Whitcombe’s 302. Hagen made a lion hearted effort. He played superbly over the homeward half, which he had to do in 36. He took 4-4-4-3-4-4-0-4-4. The excitement was intense over the last two holes. He had a nice lie off the fairway at the 17fh hole, and played a beautiful iron shot. He missed a three yard putt for three. He drove just over the green to the 18th, and was yards short with his third, but he holed out admidst a terrific ovation.
