HARBOUR BOARD.

j MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Timaru i Harbour Hoard was held yesterday morning. There were present —.Messrs W. hayman, (chairman;,. T. B. Gar- : rick, 1). C. Turnbull, ii. 13. S. Johnstone, J. Kennedy, it. A. Isaacs, J. Campbell, F. 11. Fiatman, and A. R. Guild. ! CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT. The chairman stated that during the month very heavy seas had been running, but no damage had resulted. ! Overseas boats in port since last nicety mg had removed 1313,238 carcases of frozen mutton. Receipts sinco last meeting amounted to £5.399 8s 9d, and accounts for payment at that meeting totalled £1,839 18s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £3,559 10s 6d. A letter was received from Mr C. N. Orbed, resigning his seat on tiie Board, owing to ill health. He thanked the members for their unlading | courtesy during the period he had represented the Levels County Council, 1 and concluded by wishing the port 1 continued success and prosperity, i It was resolved that the resignation | be held over until next meeting. The executive committee of the I Harbours Association of New Zealand, advised that it was decided to hold i the ninth conference in August next, and asked that all remits be forward ed as soon as possible. I The chairman and Mr J. Bitchcner, M.P., were appointed to represent the Board at the Conference. Messrs Perry, Kinnerney and Finch, ! forwarded a legal opinion in reference to the pilotage charges incurred by vessels calling twice at the port dur ing the visit to the Dominion. It was considered that in such cases the ves sel was exempt from pilotage rates, j The opinion was received.

j ENGINEER’S REPORT. | The Resident Engineer (Mr F. A. Clarke) reported that there had been several delays to the dredging operations since last meeting. Rough weather had accounted for five days, quarterly inspection of boilers two days, i assisting Harbourmaster with shipping j one day, one holiday, and two days replacing stranded ladder rope. The outer ! moorings had been lifted and relaid for ! a new cut further south at the outer end of the channel. Considerable difficulty had been experienced in lifting the moorings in the channel, owing to the recent heavy weather having covered the chains with a very stiff accumulation of sand and clayey material. A new cut was started at the -entrance, and this has been dredged for a length of 350 feet, and 14,000 tons of silt removed. The renewal of portion of No. 1 'Wharf lias been commenced, apd 130 feet of the decking had been lifted, and all the deck beams- Hcavv seas were experienced on the 2nd, 14th and 16th June, but practically no damage was done to any of the harbour works. After inspecting the full length of the Eastern Extension Mole it is satisfactory to find that very little damage had been done. At the' shore end there was a length of about 150 feet, where some stone had been drawn down, and 50 feet of the rails and sleepers lifted. At the bend on the harbour side for about 100 feet some more stone lias been displaced. With those exceptions the vest, of _tno work had not been disturbed. The District Manager for Railways again went into the question of further siding accommodation to open up move sections to the south, and has promised to 10. us 3s:now the result at an duly date

HARBOUR MASTER'S REPORT The Harbour Master (Captain D. McDougall reported that the arrivals during the month of May were do steam vessels, with an aggregate of 55,942 tons, and the departures, do steam vessels with an aggregate of 55,942 tons. . The weather had been unfavourable from a harbour point of view. On 28th May to sth June, and 13th to loth June an easterly swell was running, and on Juno 15, a very heavy S.E. sea came up, but fortunately on this day there was no shipping in port. No damage had been done other than minor damage to the Eastern Extension. . . The usual soundings were taken and entered in the Soundings Book. Prior to the last heavy sea they showed some slight shoaling, which lie expected had been added to by the last sea.
