PROGRESS LEAGUE ACTIVITIES.
To the Editor of ths “Timaru Herald.” Sir, —There are many of your readers who would like to know who are the members of the Christchurch Progress League which is just now asking tor a grant to its funds from our Borough Council, and when and whore the Ti tnaru branch was formed. (If it is not yet formed it is surely a bit previous in asking for a grant). Is it a fact that seme months ago Mr Clirnie addressed a public meeting, called for the purpose of forming a branch of the Canterbury League in Timaru, -na that- tho meeting turned the proposition down, and later the Mavor gave a dinner at the Grosveuor Hotel to meet Mr Clirnie, a committee being formed there and then to represent Timaru on the Canterbury Progress League? If that is so I take it that this is the committee who arc now asking for the grant from the public funds. If it is not so I would ha pleased to see a correct statement of what has beo.n done. Some colour seems to be lent to this conclusion bv the personnel of the deputation which accompanied Mr Clirnie, which to a man might have been gathered direct from the “Gentlemen’s Club,” on LoCren’s Terrace. Tt would he interestin g to know if they returned to tho club for resuscitation after leaving tho Council Chambers — T . PLATN JOE.
