NEWS AND NOTES.

An interesting topic discussed by delegates to the recent timber conference was that of wall coverings ior lesidenees. One who was present at the conference expressed the opinion that it was possible a revolution in wall coverings would be brought abo.ut in the course of a very litv-lo while. The idea is to prevent the cse of scrim, which is considered insanitary and in the long run, expensive. Plaster walls are favoured. On July 12th,. at Waimate, Pyne Gould, Guinness, Ltd, will offer the Akaroa High School Board lease, containing 184 acres. W. Parkinson and Co., of Auckland, are getting on with the construction of the Soldiers’ Memorial for Timaru. All the carving and stone cutting will be done in Auckland, and the stone will then be sent by boat to Timtiru, when it will be erected by IV. J. Harding and Co., to whom a sub-con-tract was let yesterday, for the work of erection. Eggs are cheaper this week in the Dunedin district. A drop ol 9d per dozen is reported from the wholesale marts, the price now being 2s for the first grade. The merchants say that it is the usual seasonal decline, indicating nothing serious. The explanation seems to be that when eggs are at a high price the people at largo become sparing in their use', and, the buying falling off, the supply exceeds the demand. '
