FIGHTING WHITE SCOURGE.
Inoculation Against Consumption.
DOCTOR’S IMPORTANT CLAIM.
By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m., June 26.) PARIS, June 26. Dr. Calmette, sub-director of the Pasteur Instant, read a paper at the Academy of Medicine, on the discovery of the method of inoculation against tuberculosis, which greatly interested the scientists. Dr. Calmette has been experimenting with preventive serums for many years, and the result attained is regarded as an important discovery. It is emphasised that the serum has only preventive effects, and is not applicable to those actually affected with consumption. The vaccine is constituted by a special kind of , Koch bacilli socially attenuated by 230 successive cultures in the flesh of the bullock’s head. With this attenuation, the bacilli lose their power to provoke the fo. matioii of tubercules. An experiment with calves proved the vaccine proof against virulent bacilli sufficiently strong to kill within eight weeks.
