ANNUAL MEETING

The forty-ninth annual meeting of the South Canterbury _ Caledonian Society, was held last night, when there was a largo attendance and the president (Mr W. Hall) occupied the chair.

The annual report, which has been published, was taken as read. The president expressed -pleasure at seeing such a largo number of members present. He made sympathetic reference to the death of the late Mr Wm. Priest, and to the death of the late Mr David Stuart, both of whom, he said, had done yeoman sendee on behalf of tho Society. A. motion of sympathy to their respective families had been forwarded by the directors. The president went on to say that the next sports meeting of the Society would be its fiftieth, and something special should be done to mark the jubilee. The report now before the meeting was a very satisfactory one, and for the first time in the history of the Society the balance sheet showed that interest had been earned by tho Society. In the previous forty-eight years, of the existence of the Society it had to pay interest, but this year it had received £27 in this way. lhey now had a credit balance of £415. It had been their aim to secure a credit balance of £SOO so that they would be in a position to>,meet a loss should rain come, on one or both of the sports days. There were several improvements required at the grounds. Ihe fence around them had been up tor nearly thirty years, and it would soon have to be renewed. The tea-room required flooring, and the directors room needed attention. Turnstiles were also required. Once these things were done the Society would be able to spend all it made on improvements to tho grounds. The tradespeople had again responded very liberally when called upon to give to the prize fund, and they were entitled to to the Society's best thanks. The last sports meeting had been an unqualified success ; the sports had been of a high standard, and patrons had had. only complimentary remarks to make concerning them. Mr Hall thanked his co-directors for the loyal way in which they had supported him during the year, and the secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser) and his staff for their very efficient work. (Applause). Mr John Hole seconded the motion for. the adoption of the report, and spoke appreciatively of the work of the Society. The sports were being maintained at a high standard, he said, and that was more important than a big credit balance. The last sports meeting had been a conspicuous success, and spectators and competitors, had been well satisfied. there were a nuftiber of improvements to be carried out, at the sports grounds, and he hoped their finances would enable them soon to make theso improvements. He complimented the president on tne way in which he hau carried out his duties, and said tnat satisfactory results iiud been achieved all round. , , The president invited discussion and expressed the hope that every point upon which enhgnteiiment might do desired would bo mentioned. There was no discussion, and toe report and balance sheet were unanimously adopted in wliat was declared to be record time. , As the result of a ballot the. following were elected directors for the ensuing 1 year, in places of those tviio had retired: —S. It. Burns, IV Lampbell, D. Donaldson, Vv. Hall, G. Hail, R A Rodgers, R. Watson, A. Hay, A. McKay, and P. O’Connor. Mr L. E. It was suggested that the jubilee ox the Society might be marked by a torchlight procession! and a big ball. The president said that something special should certainly be done. For one thing a brief history of the society should be printed on the programme. He had asked Mr John Hardcastle whether he would undertake to do this. (Hear, hear.)
