HEAVY DAMAGES.
CLAIMED FOR ASSAULT. By —Prej*s Association. GISBORNE, June 26. A sensational case is now occupying the attention of Sir John Sahnond and a common jury. A school mistress at Waikohu, Ivy Bell Carr, is suing Lionel Clare, coal and shipping merchant, for £SOOO damages. The statement of claim alleges that Clare tricked Carr into visiting his home, gave her drink which rendereed her uneon,sciou< and had sexual intercourse with her, as a result of which her health was' seriously affected, as she was at the time in a weak state, having le eentlv been in hospital. Plaintiff also alleges that her career has been ruined; amfthat she has suffered great agony of mind hv reason of the shame *ttrncted to the assault, and felt compelled to separate herself from her husband.
