(From Our Own Correspondent). MAGISTRATE’S COURT. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley. S.M.) BREACH OF BY-LAW. " G. E. Summerfield; 'was fined 20s and costs for driving a motor car over the intersection of King and High Streets at an excessive speed.; During the railway strike in April when the motor traffic was at its greatest, speeding in the borough be-, came very prevalent, consequently the measured “eighth” was put info commission, and the rate of speed in the following cas.es varied from 22 to 32 miles an hour, and each of the following defendants were convicted and fined 20s and costs:—Reuben Tregea, Albert Wright, G. A. Oakey, John Moore, Clifford S. Thomson, G. A. Clarke and G. A. Stoddart. For a similar offence. H. G. LangWard was convicted and fined 10s and' costs, it being explained that defendant was carrying the mails from Invercargill to Lyttelton. Michael Earl (Tirnaru), was similarly charged, and pleaded not guilty. George Judson, borough inspector, stated that on the 26th of April he saw a car travelling along King Street at a speed of 25 miles an hour. Defendant, in evidence, stated that on the day in question he was in Waikari. His car was in Tirnaru, and no one had permission to use it. The Magistrate adjourned the ease for a fortnight. A MISSING BICYCLE. Raymond Walker was charged with stealing a bicycle valued at £7 10s, the property of George Harvey. Mr Campbell, who appeared for defendant, pleaded not guilty. George Harvey stated that about 8 p.m. on the 30th December he had left his bicycle at Gapper and Sheen’s corner, and on returning half an hour later it was gone. On June 3rd he saw the bicycle in the Theatre right-of-way. He told Constable O’Connor, and was present when defendant came and took charge of the bicycle.

Constable O’Connor stated that he was standing outside the theatre when Harvev reported that the missing bicycle was in the theatre right-of-way. Witness saw defendant take charge oi the bicycle.

Defendant in evidence stated that lie saw a bike under a culvert at Waitoki. The back wheel was missing, both mudguards were buckled, and the chain was a niass of rust. About six weeks later witness again saw the bike lying on the opposite side of the road, and on leaving the place he took it, and he thought there would be no harm in picking it up. James Walker, defendant’s uncle, also gave evidence as to seeing the bicycle after one of his men had drawn his attention to it. Witness had paid an account of £2 los (produced) for a back wheel for the bicycle. M. Bell and A. Preddy, employees oi the previous witness, also gave evidence as to seeing the bicycle under a cut vert. The Magistrate .. said that, he was satisfied, after hearing the evidence of the two last witnesses, that the bicycle had been found, the case would be dismissed, but the bicycle must be res turned to the owner.
