CYCLING.
AUSTRALIANS REATEN IN FARTS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. (Received Juno 2:i. 5.5 p.m.) FAR IS, June 22. The Australian Olympic cyclists Dempsey, Coppins, and Broadbent. each won a heat in tho 500 metro rate at Velodrome to-day, but were beaten in tho semi-finals. France's best amateurs were competing. Inexperience alone handicapped the Australians, who rode surprisingly well lor their first race since landing. The experts consider Dempsey and Ooppius undoubtedly equal to France's fastest. They were not accustomed to the high-backed track near the fini-b, where they were outpaced by the Frenchmen, who wore allowed liberties in crossing and humping which would not ho tolerated in Australia. But. for the last minute interveniion hv Air Voss (Commonwealth Government representative), tho Australians would not have been allowed ’o compete, as they did not possess the necessary tiding licenses.
