An application for a license to sell fruit in the streets of Invercargill was received from a Hindu at a meeting of tlio Town Council (states the Times), but it received very scant consideration at. the hands of the councillors, who were unanimously agreed that tire necessity did not exist for the introduction of street stalls in Invercargill. A Napier police official remarked, recently, in connection with recent attempts to break into shop windows, that the flimsy fastenings to many of the display cases invited trouble, while there was the additional encouragement in .many instances. of .a dark alcove, in .which; .the nefarious work could .be done in comparative safety. The locks on most of the windows, lie stated, were not much more than toys', and he claimed to have demonstrated to several retailers that he could open their windows with a knife blade ho larger than a hail file.
