RUGBY LEAGUE IN AUSTRALIA. ENGLAND WINS FIRST TEST. By Call a—Press Association —Copyright. Received 11 p.m.. June 23. SYDNEY, June 23. The first Rugby League test, Australia v. England, was played to-day, in fine but dull weather, in the presence of sixty thousand people. The first half was very closely contested, the Australians fiercely forcing the game, which was not spectacular, and scoring the only-try of the first half, the scores at half-time being: England . 4 Australia 3 England’s score consisted of two penalty goals. Play, so far, was disappointing, and very slow, and much below international form, but Australia’s forwards were much superior to the visitors. The second half opened with Australia still attacking, but the visitors backs were too good, and towards the finish, England took the game into their own hands and outplayed the Australians, who slowed down. The Englishmen took command, crossing the line four times. Final scores:— England . . . 22 Australia 3 The game was much faster in the second half, but was marred by rough play, in which the Australians were the principal offenders.

CANADIAN ASSOCIATION TEAM IN AUSTRALIA. DEFEATED IN THIRD TEST.

In the first half, Australia attacked strongly ai® outclassed the visitors. RUGBY UNION.

Tlie weekly meeting of the Alangeinent Committee of tne South Canterbury Rugby. Union was field in the secretary's office last evening. Present —Messrs H. H. Fraser (cnairniau), G. Fairbrothcr, Hugh Fraser, J. Harley, J. Waddell, D. Hertnon, S. Williams, J. V. McKeaguo (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from .Messrs B. Manning, and J. Kennedy. The AYaihi Club wrote withdrawing treir junior team from the competition. Resolved that all games won by the team be annulled. Confirmation was received from the North Otago Union of July 19, as the date lor the match between South Canterbury and North Otago at Oamaru. The Ashburton sub-Union applied for a Junior representative match. -—• Agreed that a match be played on July 19, at Ashburton. It was decided to write to the Canterbury Union asking for a match against their junior representative team to be played at Timaru on its way to or from Dunedin. Mr Harley was appointed in the place of Air Alanning (during his incapacitation) on the Referees’ Appointment Board. Messrs S. AVilliams, Hugh Fraser, and the ,Rev. G. D. Falconer were appointed selectors for the junior representative team. It was agreed that a match be played against Waimate on July 10, at Waimate. Tlie fixing of a date for the representative match against Ashburton was held over until next week. The sum of £25 was offered the Alarlborough team for their match against South Canterbury at Timaru.
