A Press message from Invercargill slates that during the freezing season just closed, the Southland works killed 1:3,327 sheep, 3-16,838 lambs, and 2327 cattle. Sheep increased in number by 6258, and cattle by 387; lambs decreased by 18,370 over the figures for the previous year. This no doubt is due to the number of lambs being railed north, where many Southland lambs leave the works branded “prime Canterbury.” It is estimated that approximately 80,000 head of stock from Southland, principally lambs. were killed in northern works during the present season.
