SPEED LIMITS.

ECHO OF TEMUKA CASE. The Timaru Borough Council is in receipt of the following letter from the South Canterbury Automobile Association:—“The Otago Motor Club appeared at Temuka Court recently to defend an action brought against one ol its members for exceeding the speed limit of six miles per hour over a street intersection. The Magistrate took the course of informing counsel what his opinion as a private individual was. The gist of his remarks u T as that the by-law was absurd, and the speed limit an impracticable and unreasonable one. He advised counsel to confer with representatives of the motor organisations, and endeavour to arrive at a reasonable speed limit. This was agreed to. and a conference will be held within the next few days. As the result ot this case, the speed limit of six miles per hour in Timaru will be directly affected, and this Association desires you to appoint two representatives to he present at the conference at Temuka.'” . ' At last night’s meeting of the Council the Mayor moved that the Automobile Association should be advised that the Council intended to adhere to the by-law, which had been constituted in accordance with what was considered right and proper for the town. Councillor Guinness said the Automobile Association would he very disappointed if the Council did not send delegates to the conference at-Temuka as suggested. • Councillor Anstey said that the six mile per hour speed limit really only applied to the George Street and Church Street intersections. It was understood that that limit did not apply everywhere in the town. Councillor Shirteliff said that the present by-laws had been upheld by the Magistrate, and convictions had been obtained upon them. He would like to see more prosecutions for speeding. The Mayor said he did not think it would be a wise thing to consider altering the by-laws. The Mayor’s motion was carried.
