ASHBURTON WINTER MEETING

SHERLOCK WINS WINTER STEEPLES. The Ashburton County Racing Club’s winter meeting was concluded on Saturday. After a rather cold morning, the weather became milder, and in tne afternoon was comparatively warm. The track was on tiie soft side, but was riot slushy, good natural drainage leaving allowed tne water to get away. The portions of the enclosure near tne stancis and totalisator house, however, showed the eltects of the first clay’s traffic, and in spite of a liberal covering or straw and manuka, the conditions underfoot presented an unpleasant contrast witn those overhead, and again affected business at the totalisator. The sum handled for the seven races amounted to £ 10,845, compared with £15,348 invested on eight races on the second day of the autumn meeting in 1923. 'The turnover for the meeting totalled £20,916, against £28,889 a year ago, when two more races were run. 1 lie attendance was not large, the disagreeable experience of the opening dav making a good many people from South Canterbury, and no doubt lrom other parts, unwilling to return. 'The chief event on the card, the v\ inter Steeplechase, fell to Sherlock, a novice at tiro business, and the improving Oamani gelding Paddy’s Hope, captured the principal fiat race. As on the opening day, fields were large, and the average per race during tne two days, probably constituted a record tor the club. ... Koval Star, who had been travelling like a winner when he was brought down on the first day, was backed to odds on in the hurdle race, with Likelihood next in demand. I‘Jvmg Master set the pace over the first hurdle, at which Bellrock came down and Royal Star had a life, the pair being squeezed to the inside. Turning into the bacK Flving Master was showing the way to 1 Fort Regal, Pomposo and Royal Star. Frisco Mail came down at the hurdle near the seven furlong barrier. At the bend Fort Regal ran past I lying Master, and Royal Star and Likelihood moved up. At the home turn Roya Star headed Fort Regal and Likelihood also moved up on the inside. Likelihood joined Royal Star at the last hurdle, and carried linn out wide. The pair landed together, and after a strenuous encounter Royal Star, woo was not so well handled as Likelihood, pulled his backers through by • a head. Wnola was third, eight lengths back, followed by Fort Regal and Pomposo. The winner fenced very carefully all through, and Likelihood repeated his trick of running down the hurdles. There was solid support for \\ ars.cer, Tborndale, Sir Walter and Markie in tho Winchmore Hack. Sir Walter caused some delay by refusing to line up at the barrier, and Coureclette also was inclined to give trouble.. Markie, Warseer and Thorndalo were first to show out, but Warseer was chopped out and drifted back to the rear. Markie Jed round the bend and into tho straight from Thorndale and Espacla, and although Thorndale headed him momentarily a furlong from home, the Markhope gelding finished the belter of the twain, and won by hall a length. Adopted, who was one ot the last into the straight, got through on the vails and secured third money, being about three lengths behind Thorndale Sunny Mac was fourth and Espada fifth. As on the first day Thorndale appeared to weaken whan holding a winning hand, but Markie, who was entrusted with more money than on I'ridav s race, displayed considerable miprovemeiit on liis'previous running. In the Winter Steeplechase eleven faced the starter. Before tho raco Whipcord was purchased by S>r G. Campbell, and was coupled oil tho totalisator ‘with Tigerland. Galway wound up a slightly bettor favoume than the bracket, which in Turn was a Jittle more fancied than Paul I rv. Sherlock led over the first fence, at which Intolerance ran off, Woodrow fell, and Paul Pry made a faulty jump. At the stand double, Sherlock am Tokomairiro were on terms, followed by Tmcrland, Galway, Paul Pry and faimu 11., Blue Streak and Auroro having tailed off. Going up the back Sherlock, Tokomairiro and Tigerland wore together, six or eight lengths clear of 'Gahvay and Paul Pry (lainui 11. having fallen at the stand double). Tokomairiro was in charge at the far turn, but at the bend Sherlock dashed off again and showed the way over the last pimp to Tigerland and Tokomairiro Holding his own to tho end Sherlock won nicely by three lengths from Tigerland. who defeated Galway by four lengths. Tokomairiro was a couplo of lengths further back, followed by Paul prv. Blue Streak and Auroro also completed tho course. Sherlock’s performance suggested that lie would nave been hard to beat, on the previous day had ho not been canned oIT by Blue Streak. Tigerland, who does not appear to be too sound, ran a good race, but Gal wav did not jump as quickly under his additional weight as he did on Fridav. Tokomairiro is racing into form and his turn should come soon. The Methvcn gcldling Nagol Pointer was installed a solid favourite lor tho Melrose Tret, but Generator’s friends rallied round him again and scut him out second choice. Bridget Lynn and Talent led for two furlongs, when they were joined hv Generator. Winsome Melody moved up at the five furlongs, but soon dropped back. At the bond /Talent and Generator wore in charge from Nagol Pointer, with Rehe! and Logic moving up fast. Logic and Generator turned for home with Rebel almost on terms, but in the run home, if became a one-horse race, Rebel drawing away to win very easily by four lengths from Nelson Mac, who finished fast on the outside and defeated Logic on the post by a head. Generator, a length a wav, was fourth, well clear ot Lady Petersen. Rebel won even easier than on the opening day. and now that his manners at the post have impiored, lie, should not bo long in gaining distinction in better company. Will Oakland, Radial, Guncase and Paddy’s llopo wore supported in that order in the County Handicap, for which nine were girthed up. Paddy s Hope and Will Oakland made play from Whipping Boy and Guncase, and rounding tho curve the order was Paddy’s Hope, Will Oakland, Radial, with Gunease next. Paddy’s Hope was never headed, and ridden out won by three lengths from Carmine, who appeared on tho scone at the top of the straight ~»ud beat Wdl Oakland by a good

length for second honours. Radial was hair a length further away, two lengths in trout of Guncase. Paddy's Hope has made remarkable improvement this season, and apparently lias Jiis best card still to play. Guncase did not reproduce his first, day’s form, and it may be that he runs best when he secures a good position at the outset, but his chance may have been affected, by the fall his rider sustained in tho hurdle raco.

Speculation- was brisk on tlie Moreton Hack, Prompter, iviiocklyn, Queen Balboa, Proliliman. Miss Minerva and Viewpoint all eliciting strong support. Knoolclyn, Incursio and Miss Minerva were tire early leaders, Queen Balboa and Prompter being among the rear division. Miss Minerva and Knocklyii led into the straight attended" by Incursio and Proliliman, with Prompter shut in on the rads, and Queen Balboa travelling fast on the outside. Miss Minerva appeared to bore in on Knocklyn, closing a gap through which Prompter was about to dash. In a desperate finish, in which there was a good deal of bumping, Incursio secured the verdict by a head from Queen Balboa, Proliliman being half a length behind the Washdyke filly. Prompter, who was twice disappointed in trying to get an opening near the rails, was another length away, with Miss Minerva next.

The biggest pool of tlie meeting was collected on the concluding event. Soll'crite was ihe popular selection, but WTiarfedale, Dancing Days and Radial were all solidly supported. Dancing Days and Wharfedale were first to show out, and carried on the. running until the straight was reached. In the race to the winning post Prosperity shot out, and remained in lront until a few strides from the judge, when Radial, who had been in the rear with Solferite. for most of the trip, put in a strong run and scored by a head. Solferite came from the back and collected tail'd money, a couplo of lengths behind the leading pair. Whariedalo and Dancing Days were next to finisn. Radial's experience was a unique one, as it was the first time in his lengthy career that he had been asked to contest two races in one day. In the County Handicap a little over an hour earlier, the veteran was beaten for speed, but the outing must have, done him good, as he finished in Ins oldtime fashion with his ears pricked.
