OBITUARY.

MR J. R. ORFORB. Mr J. R.'Orford, M.A., principal of Waihi School, Winchester, died yesterday, after an ?f dgY two days, the cause of dearth being Pn fh™°late Mr Orford came Zealand about thirty years ag£“a£t« a distinguished career at Canitodge University. His school became so popular soon atter he started that -pupils were sent to it from various parts of New Zealand, and there was invariably a waiting list. He was widely known m scholastic circles and news of his sudden dca/cu will 'come as a shock to his numerous friends, here and in the Old Land, as well as to his pupils, past and present. ■Mr Orford married Miss Mating, and is survived hy his widow and three daughters.

PATRICK BURKE. Tho death accurred at liis residence, Geraldine, a few days ago of Mr Patrick Burke, one of Geraldines oldest and most esteemed settlers. Born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, in 1850, he emigrated to New Zealand about 56 years ago, and experienced many of the hardships incidental to pioneering. For many years he was engaged in road making m the Mackenzie Country, and many of the fine roads now in use there were made bv him. Finallv he took up land at Belfiold. which ho successfully fanned, up to about twelve years ago. Since that date he had lived m retirement in Geraldine. Of a quiet and retiring nature he never took part m publio affairs.’ although he will be remembered on'the turf, being very fond of a good thoroughbred. He enjoyed good health up to about four months ago, when ho gradually went down the hill. He is survived by a widow and two sons Mr J. Burke (P.elfield) and Mr E J. Burke (Geraldine), and four daughters. —Airs A. "Williams (Ashburton)'. and the. Alisses Ellen. Kate, and Martha Burke, of Geraldine.
