BALLOON RACE.
WON BY BELGIAN. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, June 18. Fourteen balloons competing in the Golden Bennett, race have landed. The Frenchman, Laporte, was trapped in an air vacuum above Chateau Thierry, and remained suspended at a height of 9000 feet for eight hours. He jettisoned everything movable in an effort to reach an upper air current. Finally he let out gas. and descended 5000 feet, when the balloon drifted across the channel landed at Shorcham. Laporte is at present loading in the race, having covered 200 miles. (Received 7.35 p.m., June 19.) LONDON, June 19. Demuyter (Belgium) landed at Abbs Head (Berwickshire-) and won the Gordon Bennett balloon cup, covering 430 miles in 431 hours. Laporte was second. Lieutenant Demuyter (Belgian balloonist) won the Gordon Bennett Gup for the third year in succession. The trophy becomes his property. He landed on the Berwickshire coast, after 42,) hours in tho air.
