(From Our Own Correspondent). SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Temuka District High School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present— Messrs C. L. Eraser (chairman), A. K. Lawry (hon. secretary), it- Longston, A. E. Smith, W. J. Keys, Geo. Higginbottom, A. W. Buzan and L. G. tocrimsiiaw. An apology was received troiu Mr G. H. Clements. The chairman stated that he had interviewed the town clerk re the notice boards for motorists. Mr Cooper had stated that this was outside the province of the Borough Council, but the Automobile Association might do something in the matter. The new boundary fence between the school and Mrs McClintock’s property, had been erected at a cost of £l9 10s. Mr W. F. Evans forwarded a cheque for two guineas as a contribution towards the children’s cocoa fund. Received with thanks. The headmaster reported that the attendance since the holidays had not been quite as good as formerly, particularly in the infant department, where only GG per cent, of the children had been present during the past three weeks. The inspectors had paid tlicir annual visit and had expressed themselves as being well pleased with the manner in which the work was being carried out. Messrs Longston and Lawry reported on malting a visit of inspection to the school, and with the exception ol a few small repairs everything was found to be satisfactory. „. Accounts amounting to £23 bs ou were passed for payment.

METHODIST WINTER EVENING SOCIAL. The fortnightly continuation social in connection with the Methodist Ghurcn was held on Tuesday evening. About fifty young people were present, and a very eiqoyaoie and instructive evening was spent. Mr B. Moiwell, as chairman, called on Dr. 'A. Mutinies, who had promised to provide “an evening with a microscope. The doctor commenced by giving a brief description of the construction and value of the instrument in various forms of scientific investigation. Ibis was followed by a practical demonstration, and by means of iniscroscopos of varying power, those present were able to seo some of the wonders of the miscroscopic world. At the conclusion the Rev. Mr Richards and Mr Shaw, moved a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer Supper was then handed round, and a very happy function was brought to a close. CARD TOURNAMENT; The weekly card tournament will be continued to-morrow evening, wlien the Hibernians will meet tue Udcileilows and the-Druids will play the Howlers. Tlio death occurred at Ashficld Road, iemuka, of Mr Thomas Burnett, who was lor 50 years a resident of South Canterbury. He came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Otrato fifty years ago, landing at Timaru. For some time he was employed on the railways in this country, helping to build the first railway line. He is survived by his widow, one married daughter (Mrs Walter Reilly, of Winchester) and two sons. The interment which took place at Temuka, was private. HILTON. During the last two months the Hilton Rifle Club have been holding weekly euchre parties and for the five nights’ aggregate the lady’s prize was won by Miss Olive Patrick. Mr G. Sumnierfield and Mr R. J. Cornelius tied or the men's prize, and in the play off, Mr Sumnierfield was declared the winner. Last Monday night the lady’s prize was won by Miss Leary, and the men’s by Mr G. Summerfield; the consolation • prizes fell to Miss Payne and Mr W. Patrick. Music for the dance was supplied by M. Patrick and A. Fletcher, and supper was provided by Mr M. Charles.

PERSONAL. Mr G. Hancox, M.A., who has just succeeded Mr Upie, as Director of the Technical School at Palmerston North, js a son ol Mr, anti Mrs (Jeo. JiuucoXj of Jeniuka. . . . Mr J. IP Anderson, who was injured at the recent lire in Temuka, is making very satisfactory progress, and hopes to be about again very shortly. NOTES.
