HOCKEY NOTES.

iffo- 1 ~7. . (By “Circle”)..

COMPETITION TABLE.

This week’s fixtures —5 and 6-asido tournaments at Timaru. Park. The Management Committee are hoping to receive record entries this year. The institution of a junior section should-prove a great boon to - young teamp. I hope to see Winchester and Pleasant Point ladies represented in , this Section. -■ Rumour has it that the Geraldine men’s club are entering four teams in the Junior section. , Geraldine are nothing if not enthusiastic. ; In’ the senior men’s grade, Geraldine, Cambridge and C.F.C.A. -should have -at least two teams in action. Last year’s winners were Ladies, Orari B; men, C.F.C.A. The game between Cambridge and v. Geraldine B, proved rather more in teresting than the score would indicate. Tiie lieu and Blacks have vastly improved, and a noticeable feature ol their play was the absence of infringe-’ ments. This speaks volumes for the club coach. Of the players F. Lord, A. Loach, and the goalkeeper A. Moyle, ■ were perhaps the pick. The forwards require a little more ginger in the circle, and had this been evident on Saturday, the Reds must have scored. The Cambridge team played with an altered forward line, which should greatly improve their attack. The j rllues were responsible for a fair number of infringements, but referee Ben- | liington made his weight felt, and towards the finish breaches were less evident. A. Stead replaced. L. Davis at centre forward, and played his best game this season. His three goals were all the result of good, heady play. ,J. Taverner,; wlio was moved jup front the half line to inside left, justified his change by netting two goals. He. should, ’ however, cu t out the ‘one-hand play, keep his stick under control, and remember .that there are more forwards than one in a team. Jones, at left wing, was weak, and was usually out of place when the ball was sent out to him. Davis, who was at centre half, and Goodman at right half, played well., The first named player.Ms .in-.’ cljjieid .ia-.ha.ng on too long?- .‘iiiaggaal. .< WIJ.S. a . real good effort. TTheC backs, Gow. and Peterson, did not impress one as being safe. Gow should take more time with his hits, and Peterson should try ,to stop the ball before hitting Hughes, m goal, was not called,,upon to do much, but what he dicl do, -he did well. There are no less than ' -five , players in this team who are would-ba supporters of the one-handed game. Two hands must be used if control oi the bait is to be maintained.

In the • ladies? .- games, Orari again demonstrated their gre afc combi nation, and other teams would do' well tdicopy their tactics, instead of tile hit. and follow up style adopted by most of the town teams. A large number of play crs in the ladies’ competition seem to lack speed, and do not understand what is meant by “wood.” Tipping the ball in hockey is useless. Develop sine stopping apd hard hitting backs, and. a speedy combined forivaid .line. For Stafford, Miss Reid in goal play-* cd well, and was called upon to save on several occasions. Celtic were* unlucky not to win, .as their efforts at combined play were very creditable. The Greens are developing into a good team, and. next season ihtuld prove a proposition tp any team. Timaru were by no means disgraced by their defeat at the hands of Orari.. Phis club possesses quite a good deal jf young blood, which only, requires leveloping under the eye of a good : loach.

The Geraldine-C.F.C.A. game proved fast and exciting, tho result : being, perhaps, rather surprising. One member of the Geraldine team was reported to hjive said that their forward line was u one-man show, but according to 'repoits, the same line worked like one man t'u Saturday. This will greatly encourage tho Reds, as they have had a big struggle to obtain anything like a forward line this year. Voss, at insido left, was to the front as usual, and netted four goals, Sharpe seems to justify his inclusion as centre forward. The veteran, Dave Turner, played a great game in goal, and time and again the Yellows were debarred the net. G.F.C.A. appeared to be a beaten team at half time, but made a . good recovery, and scored four of their five goals in this half. They were, however, decidedly, unlucky in. being without the. services of Remiett at full hack. Quito a number of the Yellow shots at goal went wide. It would hardly be fair to close these notes without making some reference to the services rendered to- hockey in Timaru by “Goalie.” This gentleman has retired from the position of critic,, and his loss will be greatly felt. Much - time is necessary, in order that as many games as possible may he viewed, and as “Goalie” is unable that time, he has resigned. I am sure all hockey players,, will join iri thafikmg him for past services, y:
