AMERICA’S NEXT PRESIDENT.

Selecting Democratic Nominee. veritable battle of giants. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. (Received 9.30 p.m., June 18.) WASHINGTON, June 17. The Democratic Convention,, which a week away, promises to offer a veritable battle between the political giants of the party, a state of affairs obviously lacking at Cleveland wliei*. President ■ Coolidge’s influence was omnipotent. Aspirants for the democratic Presidential honour are in the following order of importance: Mr McAdoo, Mt Smith, Senator . Ralston, Senatoi Underwood, ex-Ambassador Davis, Senator Glass, Governor Silzer of New Jersey, ex-Governor Cox of Ohio, ex Vice-President Marshall, Mr Homer Cummings (temporary chairman of tlie Democrat Convention. 1920) and Mr Vance McCormick (manager of Mr Wilson’s 1916 campaign). It would not be surprising, however. if practically an unknown figure rose'triumphant as a compromise candidate, following a prolonged conflict among the major aspirants.* This is especially likely since 203 majority delegates are required for the choice. Mr McAdoo’s forces are determined to institute the simple majority practice, but this is unlikely to succeed. The party* leaders are making strenuous efforts to avoid schism in the convention, leading to a lasting breach between the factions, for perfervid enthusiasms are expected. to reign, and deep differences of opinion are already* in evidence.
